We are proud to share that our senior partner Paul Ryan, head of our tax litigation and voluntary disclosures department, was invited to share his expertise on the program La Commission, broadcast on 98.5 FM.
During the interview, Me Ryan addressed a troubling finding revealed by the Auditor General of Canada: 83% of calls to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) receive the wrong answer.
This situation raises a crucial question: is simplifying tax law a realistic solution or a utopian dream?
Me Ryan explained the challenges associated with the complexity of the Canadian tax system and the fact that the complexity of tax laws stems from their dual role of collecting taxes and stimulating the economy in sectors that vary from year to year, such that the current laws are an amalgamation of all these reforms.
Me Ryan emphasized the importance of healthy dialogue between the Department of Finance and the tax community, which seems to have been lacking recently, citing as an example the new “EIFEL” rules, which are incredibly complex and whose practical application far exceeds the tax policy objectives that led to their adoption, with no apparent interest on the part of the Department of Finance in adjusting them in light of the countless comments from the community.
