Recruitment Season: Questions You May Be Asked and Questions To Ask

Feb 5th, 2025

By Carolyn Booth and Erica Leibovitch

If you are considering participating in recruitment season, it is essential to prepare for questions that your interviewers may ask you, as well as a few brief questions that you may want to ask your interviewers.

What you may be asked:

  • What skills do you possess that would make you an asset to our office?

Highlight what skills you have that will benefit the team you aspire to join.

  • What is it about our office that interest you?

Do your homework. Make sure you have researched the office you are interviewing for (and the interviewers) before attending the interview. Know their values, objectives, and practice areas. Your interest in the office should be genuine.

  • How would you respond if you had a professional disagreement with a colleague?

This is a tough one, but it will show your interviewers how you would address a conflict. This says a lot about your personality, which your interviewers want to know about!

These questions may or may not be asked, but the answers you will prepare will help you showcase your talents in an interview setting, and why you may be a good fit for the office.

What you may want to ask:

  • What does mentorship look like at your office?

Here you are asking to find out who will be your mentor and how you will be mentored. You can also ask how your work will be supervised and by whom.

  • What does success look like at your office?

Each office is different, and their objectives and metrics for success will vary (billable hours, skill development, client relations, etc.). It is important to understand the expectations of a student, stagiaire, and future lawyer at that law firm so that you can strive to meet them accordingly.

You should feel comfortable asking the interviewers questions you truly want to know the answers to, so take this opportunity to get the information you need before making an important decision.

We wish you the best of luck, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
