Donor-Conceived Children: Know Your Rights

Feb 10th, 2026

By Carolyn Booth

Part 3

Prior to June 6, 2025, children born from the contribution of an egg or sperm donor (namely, donor-conceived children) did not have the right to any information regarding the donor who contributed to their genetic makeup. With the adoption of Bill 12[1], several articles of the Civil Code of Quebec were added to provide for the rights of donor-conceived children. The law in Quebec now stipulates that donor-conceived children have access to certain information regarding their donor, which is retained by a register from the provincial government, titled the Register of Origin Information in Procreation Involving a Third Person. The information collected and retained by the register includes the following from the donor:

  • First and last name
  • Age
  • Ethnic origins
  • Civil status
  • Level of education, diplomas, and field of study, if any
  • Profession, if any
  • Height
  • Skin colour
  • Eye colour
  • Hair colour and texture
  • Personality traits, special skills, preferences and hobbies

If you or your child is a donor-conceived person and wants to learn about their rights, please contact us.
